Superfruit Spritzer

Who says red wine is the only drink good for your health?

This deep ruby little beauty has all the antioxidants a healthy and refreshing summer cocktail needs. Gin-based, my Superfruit Spritzer gets its gorgeous color from a berry-bonanza of dark fruits with fresh muddled blueberries (loaded with good stuff for you) and this Acai Black Currant SuperFruit Syrup™  from Sonoma Syrup Co. It’s an all-natural fruit syrup that’s handcrafted in Sonoma in small batches and made with pure cane sugar and superfruits. A double dose of good-for-you ingredients packed into a decadent and deeeelicious sip that’s perfect for those lazy afternoons when doing nothing is everything.

Açaí (pronounced ‘ah-sigh-ee’), a purplish grape-like berry from a palm tree, originated deep in the Brazilian Amazon and is chocked full of powerful nutrients making it one of the world’s best energy sources for the body. And its syrup buddy, the black currant, is rich in Vitamin C, amino acids, and heaps of other beneficial antioxidants. Granted, currants don’t often get the glory from the health world its partner here does, so why not give it some love – cocktail style- by incorporating its sweet & tart flavor along side the subtle floral notes of a great Gin. I like to think drinking this berry patch in a glass is you and I doing something good for our health–which means we can have two right? Oh, and btw, this syrup is also pretty darn yummy on pancakes too….just sayin’. Cheers!

1/4 cup blueberries, fresh or frozen (approx. 16-18 berries, depending on size)
1 jigger Sonoma Syrup Co. Acai Black Currant SuperFruit Syrup™
2 jiggers Gin (I used Damrak for its light, clean flavor)
1/2 jigger Cinzano Rosso
Seltzer or club soda for topping
Blueberries & mint for garnish

Add 1/4 cup blueberries to a shaker. Muddle gently until they release their juice. Add in a couple of ice cubes along with Syrup, Gin, and Cinzano Rosso. Shake well. Strain into tumbler glass over ice. Top with seltzer water or club soda. Garnish with blueberries and mint leaf.

* I’ve been using Sonoma Syrup Co. products for years, so I already love their line. They recently gifted me a few of their syrups and extracts, but all opinions, text, photography are my own.

Entourage Elixir ~ A Tequila Cocktail

Happy National Tequila Day!
entourage exlixir-1

I created this tequila and bitter lemon drink right after seeing the Entourage Movie. If you saw it, then you’ll know why tequila was on my  brain. As soon as I walked in the door, I went over to my liquor cabinet, pulled out the Tequila Avión Reposado (that’s my fav, and looks like I need to buy more!), then rummaged around the “mixer” compartment in my fridge –better known to most people as the crisper bin, but alas mine has never seen even a leaf of a vegetable, just lots of stuff to mix with booze!–and found a bitter lemon mixer. Viola, my Entourage Elixir was born. Talk about the power of suggestion huh!

If you aren’t familiar with the Entourage tie-in, read the full story here. But here’s a quick explanation: the original Entourage series on HBO® first introduced the Tequila Avión brand to the masses here in the U.S. through an on-going storyline with one of the characters. Most people thought it was just a made up brand for the series. They had no idea it was a real Tequila. Once people realized they could buy it….well, the rest is history. And movie spoiler alert: we learn it’s ultimately how Turtle made his millions. Zoing!

My choice for the mixer– no brainer- had to be FeverTreeI love their brand of tonics and mixers. I typically use their Bitter Lemon or Sparkling Lemon. They’re truly a cut above the rest. Can’t wait to try their new Elderflower tonic water too! What I like about either of their lemon bottlings is the bitterness is mixed in with just a touch of sweetness. They both have the undeniable flavor of true British bitter lemon soda. And bubbles add a nice touch to any cocktail right!

If you really want to get into the spirit of today (ha, pun totally intended), then enjoy this sip with my Margarita Shrimp Tacos. Cheers to the conclusion of a great show and all-things Tequila.  Salud!

3 ounces Tequila
half bottle (3.5 ounces) FeverTree Bitter Lemon or Sparkling Lemon Mixer
juice of one lemon and one lime
lemon or lime slice to garnish

Combine tequila and citrus juices in a shaker over ice. Shake well. Pour into tumbler glass over ice. Top with lemon mixer. Garnish with citrus slice.

If you can’t find FeverTree Bitter Lemon or Sparkling Lemon, use any bitter citrus soda like San Pellegrino Pompelmo (grapefruit)….or a brand you like. For the Tequila, I used Reposado (my favorite) but a Blanco/Silver or Añejo works fine too. Just make sure it’s the good stuff!

Kona Sunset Cocktail

Kona Sunset cocktail |

POG=Passion fruit + Orange + Guava. Anyone who’s been to the Hawaiian Islands has experienced its breathtaking sunsets and probably its delicious (and addictive) signature juice concoction of three tropical fruits known as POG. As you all know, I *love, love, love* passion fruit (or liliko’i in Hawaiian ). So anything with liliko’i in it, I’m drinking it. Our family is finishing up a week-long stay here in Kona on the Big Island to celebrate my parents 50th wedding anniversary. I know, an amazing accomplishment, right? So what better time to get my aloha-spirit on than with this POG & Tequila-based cocktail to mark such a momentous occasion. The soft peachy-pink colors of this drink were inspired of course, by the surreal sunsets we witnessed each night.

At our resort, there was a liliko’i vine growing near the room. Heaven! I’ve eaten so many of these crinkly yellow fruits this week and yet, I’m no where near overload. I want more! Don’t think my family quite realized how obsessed I am with passion fruit till now. They think I’m coco-nuts actually. Probably am….but I’ll happily wear that badge as long as I can keep tucking into these juicy little fruits. One of the three ingredients in this Kona Sunset Cocktail is my other special find —a tasty, all natural Liliko’i soda from Waialua Soda Works on the North Shore of Oahu. This bubbly sweet-n-tart soda is the perfect mate to the POG juice and silver Tequila.

Sadly, we’re finishing up our fabulous stay in Kona today and must return to the real world tomorrow.  I’ll be sharing more of my island adventures in paradise in future posts. But for now, a heartfelt “mahalo” to this beautiful place for an amazing week of sunshine, surf and all its wonderful tropical bounty. Aloha! Happy 50th Anniversary Mom and Dad!

3 ounces POG *
6 ounces Liliko’i Soda**
1.5 ounces of silver Tequila
guava fruit for garnish

Pour all ingredients into a tumbler glass over ice. Garnish with guava fruit or orange slice.

* if you can’t find POG, use a combination of guava nectar and orange juice.
** I don’t think this soda is available on the mainland , so a good substitute would be the Passion Fruit LaCroix Sparkling Water (Target).
